1) BUY THE RIGHT SUPPLIES
To make your children a healthy school lunch, make sure you are equipped with the right supplies. For Example, a divided lunch container (to separate nuts, fruit, egg etc). ice packs (to keep fresh chicken or turkey cold), insulated lunch bag and a thermos and a cup (to pack soups and smoothies).
2) MAKE MEALS, FREEZE LEFTOVERS
Make and freeze homemade goodies. If you add any homemade items to your kids lunchbox, make sure you're making the foods ahead of time and freezing them for a rainy day. Make a double batch of whatever you're cooking for dinner over the weekend or on your day/s off (some easy ideas include soups, bolognese and stews). Whip up a batch of healthy muffins or other snack alternatives while you are already in the kitchen making dinner.
3) WHAT TO FORGET
Forget already bought lunchmeat. Most lunchmeat options are highly processed, so when it comes to sandwiches, consider other alternatives like hummus, egg, chicken or turkey breast, tinned tuna, pesto and fresh tomatoes or even 100% all natural peanut butter.
4) THINK OUTSIDE THE SQUARE
Rather than using the same predictable wholemeal sandwich bread over and over again, consider other options, including stackable foods from apple slices, sliced vegetables, whole-grain tortillas, or homemade banana bread. You could even abandon a sandwich all together and instead, pack rice cakes, rice paper rolls, egg and bacon cups, sweet potato chips etc.
5) GET CREATIVE
Add fun toothpicks and thoughtful lunch notes, or use cute “cookie” cutters to shape certain foods, fruit, and cheese. Healthy lunches definitely don’t have to be boring!
